What are the precautions for transportation of new energy cables

New energy cable (e.g. electric vehicle charging cable PV cable , wind power cable, etc.), because it undertakes the task of high voltage and large current transmission, and often uses special materials (such as weather resistant insulation layer, flame retardant sheath), its transportation process needs to strictly avoid physical damage, environmental erosion and performance degradation. The following are specific precautions:

I Packaging protection: avoid physical damage

  1. Specification winding and fixing
    • The cable shall be wound in Hard cable reel (made of wood or steel, with a diameter ≥ 10 times of the outer diameter of the cable). Baffles shall be installed on both sides of the reel (height ≥ 1.5 times the cable diameter) to prevent the cable from sliding from the side.

    • The end of the cable shall be sealed: the cable joint shall be sealed with an insulating waterproof cap to prevent dust and moisture from entering the conductor or insulation layer (especially for outdoor cables such as photovoltaic cables, where moisture intrusion may cause the insulation resistance to drop).

  2. Cushioning and reinforcement
    • The contact part between reel and transport vehicle shall be padded Rubber cushion (thickness ≥ 5cm) to reduce vibration transmission caused by turbulence (to avoid conductor breakage or insulation layer fatigue inside the cable).

    • Steel belt or high-strength nylon belt shall be used to fix the reel (at least 4 fixing points, symmetrically distributed), and the fixing force shall be moderate (too tight may crush the sheath, too loose may cause the reel displacement), and non-woven protective sheath shall be padded at the binding place.

II Transportation environment: control temperature and humidity and avoid corrosion

  1. temperature control
    • Summer transportation: required Enclosed car The sun visor shall be installed, and if necessary, the on-board air conditioner shall be used to control the temperature (25-35 ℃);

    • Winter transportation: For the northern severe cold area, the cable reel can be wrapped with insulation cotton to avoid long-term exposure to the environment below - 20 ℃.

    • Avoid extreme temperature: insulation layer (such as XLPE cross-linked polyethylene) and sheath (such as TPU, EPDM) of new energy cables are sensitive to temperature. High temperature (>60 ℃) may cause material softening and deformation, and low temperature (<- 20 ℃) may cause sheath embrittlement and cracking.

  2. Moisture and corrosion protection
    • No open transportation: cover in rainy and snowy weather Waterproof canvas (The canvas shall be complete and undamaged) to ensure that the cable reel is completely sealed to prevent rainwater infiltration.

    • Keep away from corrosive environment: transport vehicles shall not be mixed with acid-base chemicals, oil stains, etc. (such as batteries, fertilizers) to avoid swelling and cracking of the sheath after contacting corrosive substances (such as if the acid resistant sheath of the photovoltaic cable contacts strong alkali, the surface may bulge within 30 minutes).

III Loading and unloading operation: standardize the process to prevent damage

  1. Adaptation of loading and unloading tools
    • Must use Forklift or crane When loading and unloading cable reels, manual rolling is prohibited (especially for large diameter reels, which can weigh several tons, and rolling may cause cable distortion or reel deformation).

    • Special purpose is required for hoisting Cable reel sling (such as steel cable with anti slip hook), the hook shall be fastened to the central shaft hole on both sides of the reel (it is forbidden to bind the cable body directly), and the lifting process shall be stable (inclination ≤ 5 °) to avoid collision.

  2. Stack Limit
    • Cable reel Prohibit stacking (Unless the reel is designed with a stackable load-bearing structure), the single layer placement can prevent the lower reel from being compressed and deformed, and prevent the upper layer from falling and damaging the cable.

    • If space is limited and stacking is necessary (only for small reels, weight<500kg), wooden partitions (thickness ≥ 2cm) shall be placed between layers, and the stacking height shall not exceed 2 layers.

IV Transportation process: monitoring and emergency handling

  1. Real time monitoring and route planning
    • During long-distance transportation, a temperature and humidity recorder can be placed in the carriage (record data every 2 hours) to ensure that the environmental parameters are within the allowable range (temperature - 10 ℃~50 ℃, humidity<70%).

    • Avoid bumpy road sections: asphalt or cement pavement is preferred to reduce severe vibration caused by poor road conditions (especially for twisted cables used for wind power generation, excessive vibration may damage the internal shielding layer).

  2. Emergency protection
    • Equipped with emergency tools: such as waterproof tape (temporary repair of sheath damage), spare insulating cap, fire extinguisher (most new energy cables are flame retardant, but external fire sources need to be prevented).

    • In case of sudden rainfall and package damage, it is necessary to stop immediately, wrap the damaged part with waterproof cloth, and check the cable insulation performance as soon as possible after arriving at the destination (for example, megger test insulation resistance, photovoltaic cable insulation resistance must be ≥ 100M Ω).

V Arrival acceptance and storage connection

  • Immediately after arrival, check whether the package is in good condition, whether the cable sheath has scratches/bulges/cracks, and whether the reel is deformed. At the same time, check the model and specification (such as the sectional area, temperature resistance grade, and the electric vehicle charging cable must comply with the GB/T 33594 standard).

  • If it is not used temporarily, the cable shall be stored in a dry and ventilated warehouse (away from heat sources and chemicals), and the reel shall be placed overhead (≥ 10cm above the ground) to avoid moisture erosion on the ground; The insulation performance shall be retested if the storage time exceeds 3 months.


The above measures can minimize the impact of transportation on the performance of new energy cables and ensure that they meet the core requirements of high voltage, weather resistance, safety, etc. during installation and use.
